============================================================ Adobe Optima font pack for LaTeX ============================================================ 2004-08-08 Walter Schmidt w.a.schmidt(at)gmx.net This bundle includes all required files for using the following Adobe Optima Type1 fonts with LaTeX: Optima Optima-Medium Optima-Bold This bundle does _not_ include the Type1 fonts; they are to be purchased from Adobe. The below installation instructions assume a TDS-compliant TeX system, such as teTeX, MikTeX or VTeX/Free. The directory name "texmf" refers to the root directory of the TDS directory tree. In case your TeX systems has more than one such directory tree, the documentation should tell you where to install new files. Bugs and problems ----------------- The font metrics supplied by Adobe are lacking proper kerning data for accented letters, umlauts and typical character pairs that occur in other languages than English. Change Log ---------- 2004-08-08 Fixed a potential bug in the macro package 2004-07-26 New macro package optima.sty, which supports scaling and use of the "popm" family as options 2002-12-04 LaTeX font family popm added. Directory layout changed. 2001-05-25 Metrics for Optima-Black added. True italics are no longer used, because they may not always be available. Removing absolete files ----------------------- In case you have installed any previous version of this bundle, please delete the following file manually, before installing the current one: texmf/vtex/config/pop.ali In case you have installed a previous version (< Dec. 2002) of this bundle, please delete the directories texmf/tex/latex/adobe/optima texmf/fonts/tfm/adobe/optima texmf/fonts/vf/adobe/optima incl. all their contents, and the files texmf/doc/latex/adobe/optima.txt texmf/pdftex/config/pop.cfg before installing the present release. Installing the Type1 font files ------------------------------- The Type1 font files are to be named properly for use with TeX. The names of the original files may vary, so the following table tells the related PostScript font names, too: PostScript FontName Adobe TeX ------------------------------------------------- Optima op______.pfb popr8a.pfb Optima-Medium opm_____.pfb popm8a.pfb Optima-Bold opb_____.pfb popb8a.pfb The .pfb files are to be copied to the directory texmf/fonts/type1/adobe/pop of your TeX system. (You may need to create this directory first.) The related .afm files should also be renamed accordingly and installed into the directory texmf/fonts/afm/adobe/pop Installing the TeX support files from the archive pop.zip --------------------------------------------------------- Unpack the ZIP archive pop.zip in the directory "texmf" of your TeX system; thus, all files will be copied to the appropriate directories. Configuring your TeX system --------------------------- | | You need not repeat this step, when updating from a | previous release of this collection! | The present distribution comprises several font map files for the Adobe Optima fonts. You need to configure your TeX system so that these files are actually used. The required steps depend on the particular TeX system. Particular sets of instructions are provided below for the following systems: * teTeX * VTeX/Free With other TeX systems such as MikTeX, consult the related documentation how to install an additional font map file. The name of the map file to be used for Optima is "pop.map". Two copies of this file reside in the directories texmf/dvips/config and texmf/fonts/map/dvips. Configuring teTeX ----------------- Additional font map files (here pop.map) are installed using the shell script "updmap". With teTeX-2.0 and later (or teTeX-beta as of June 2002 and later) execute the following commands: texhash updmap --enable Map pop.map With earlier versions of teTeX, consult its documentation how to install an additional map file. Configuring VTeX/Free (8.44 or later) ------------------------------------- Make VTeX read the additional font map ("aliasing") file pop.ali. This is usually accomplished by putting an appropriate record ito each of the configuration files texmf/vtex/config/pdf.fm and texmf/vtex/config/ps.fm The name "pop.ali" is to be added to the TYPE1 section of the above-mentioned files: TYPE1 { ... pop.ali } Updating the filename database ------------------------------ Certain TeX systems require updating a "filename database" manually after adding new files. Consult the documentation of your TeX system! Using the Optima fonts with LaTeX ------------------------------------------ See the file optima.txt, which should have been copied to the directory texmf/doc/fonts/adobe.
